Word Test Maker

Vocabulary Quiz Maker

Paste a word list and get an A4 test paper with its answer key straight away. You can shuffle the questions and print several different versions.

The words you paste never leave your browser.

One word per line. Separate the word from its meaning with a comma, a tab, a hyphen (-) or a colon (:) — any of them works. You can also paste two columns straight out of a spreadsheet. The meaning is optional.

How to use

  1. 1

    Paste your words

One word per line. Copy the word column and the meaning column together out of a spreadsheet or a document and they are split automatically. Leading numbers (1. 2.) and bullets (-) are removed for you.

  2. 2

    Check what was recognised

You see how many questions were found, and whether any line is missing a meaning or repeats a word. Lines where the word and the meaning are the wrong way round are put right automatically.

  3. 3

    Choose the layout

Set the direction, the type size, the number of columns and how many questions to use. "Large" suits younger learners; "Small + 2 columns" fits 50 words neatly on one page.

  4. 4

Print it or save it as a PDF

Changing Destination to "Save as PDF" in the print dialog gives you a file. The answer key follows the test paper; choose "Test only" if you do not need it.

Who it helps

  • Teachers who set a vocabulary test every week
  • Anyone who needs the same words in a different order for each class
  • Parents helping a child learn their words
  • Students who want to test themselves right before an exam

Frequently asked questions

Can I get it as a PDF?

Yes. Press "Print / save as PDF" and change Destination to "Save as PDF" in the print dialog (on a Mac, use the PDF menu). The text stays real text, so the file is small and easy to send to parents.

How should the word and the meaning be separated?

A comma, a tab, a hyphen (-) or a colon (:) — whichever you like. The separator used most often across your lines is chosen automatically. A line such as "apple, a fruit, a pome" is split only at the first separator, so the meaning is never cut in half.

My words and meanings went in the wrong way round.

Any line with Hangul on the left and Latin letters on the right is swapped automatically, and the parse report tells you how many lines were corrected. To flip everything on purpose, change "Question direction" instead.

What is the difference between sets A and B?

The same words in a different order, so neighbours cannot copy each other. Each set gets its own answer key.

Can I reprint exactly the same test?

Type anything you like into "Shuffle key". With the same word list and the same key you get the identical order back whenever you want. The key is printed in small type at the bottom of the sheet.

Does it work offline?

Yes. There is not a single external library, so once the page has loaded it works with no network at all.

Are the words I paste stored?

No. Everything happens inside your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Closing the page discards what you pasted.
